Prohibition And Temperance
Prohibition was a movement in the late 19th, early 20th century making consumption and production of alcohol illegal. Originally backed by several women's groups, the intention was to improve the quality of family life and cut down on alcoholism. Instead, speakeasies and bootlegging - dangerous and illegal forms of selling and producing alcohol - as well as organized crime became increasingly evident.
