George Wallace, Alabama Governor

George Wallace, segregation supporter and governor of Alabama

George Wallace was the governor of Alabama known for his strong support of segregation. He is perhaps most famous for standing in the doorway of the University of Alabama and refusing to let in African American students. Wallace ran for president in 1964 as a Democrat and again in 1968 as a third party candidate but was defeated both times.
